The Immune-Pineal Axis: the Role of Pineal and Extra-Pineal Melatonin in Modulating Inflammation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Participation of the pineal gland and melatonin in the innate immune response is part of a dynamic and intricate network that acts throughout the inflammatory response, integrating signaling pathways and regulatory processes at the molecular, cellular and organism levels. The pineal gland is a target for pathogen-associated molecular patterns and for inflammatory mediators, and melatonin, which may be produced by the pineal gland or by activated immune-competent cells, plays a role in modulating inflammatory responses. Nocturnal melatonin surge is suppressed at the beginning of an inflammatory response in order to allow a full mounting of an innate immune response at any hour of the day. Melatonin produced at the site of a lesion by activated immune-competent cells favors phagocytosis and reduces inflammatory reactions that could promote tissue lesion. Here, we discuss the mechanism underneath this crosstalk between the pineal gland and the innate immune response and extend the concept of an Immune-Pineal Axis.

Immune-Pineal Axis: Nuclear Factor κB (NF-κB) Mediates the Shift in the Melatonin Source from Pinealocytes to Immune Competent Cells
Pineal gland melatonin is the darkness hormone, while extra-pineal melatonin produced by the gonads, gut, retina, and immune competent cells acts as a paracrine or autocrine mediator. The well-known immunomodulatory effect of melatonin is observed either as an endocrine, a paracrine or an autocrine response. In mammals, nuclear translocation of nuclear factor κ-light-chain-enhancer of activated...

Living organisms have multiple biological rhythms. Some of these rhythms are endogenous and some are under the influence of light and dati cydes during 24-hours. Nowadays periodic changes in melatonin secretion from pineal gland and changes in N-acetyl transferase (NAT) activity which influence the melatonin secretion rate has been acknowledged as a basic rhythm. In this study NAT activity in p...

The purpose of the investigation was to establish how the pineal-adrenal axis plays an important role in thermoregulation in female goats under short-term heat stress. The study was conducted to observe the influence of glucocorticoids on pineal function in goats and its influence on stress alleviation capability. Melatonin and glucocorticoid secretions and several other endocrine and biochemic...

Dark is a generally known potent stimulus for melatonin secretion. Studies have also reported that pineal and hypophyseal endocrine secretions are influenced by nutritional factors. The study was designed to investigate the combined effect of selenium supplementations and light deprivation on pineal and hypophyseal secretions in female Wistar rats. 36 female cyclical Wistar rats were divided in...

Background and Aim: Intracranial physiologic calcification is not accompanied by any evidence of disease and has no demonstrable pathological cause. It is often due to calcium deposition in the blood vessels of different structures of the brain. Computed tomography (CT) is the most sensitive means of detection of for this calcification. The aim of this study was the assessment of the intracrani...
